Should i kill barbas

I did try to be clever and decided not to kill Barbas before he turned to stone. This glitched my game worse than ever. Clavicus Vile's statue disappeared. Please see this page on UESP for further information.

If you have taken the axe, type player. You can get the axe and the masque, don't listen to that other great answer, because I figured out a way thanks to another comment on another site i saw, but simply changed it a bit. Once given the option too kill Barbus or not quit out of the option screen then save this is not required, but highly recommended. Once done so go around the statue and open the bared door if you haven't already then jump on the chest then on the statue head looking towards the pathway out and make sure you got at least the first shout of whirlwind sprint.

If you don't got the axe keep on trying until you get it on the weapon rack and be sure before doing all of this you own a house and a weapon rack in that house in Whiterun and have at least one whirlwind sprint shout equipped and I also prefer wearing light armor and your weapon put away.

After i left my home I'm not quit sure you have to return to the cave, but i did then i randomly while in the cave got the masque and then returned to my house and still had the axe on the weapon rack. I haven't tried this myself so don't blame me if it doesn't work. According to the video, go to the top of the statue after you got the Axe. Talk to him and say you want to give it to him.

While he's in dialogue, use Slow Time and run backwards to the exit. Once outside, go to your house, and place the Axe on the weapon rack, then go back to the cave and the Masque should get added.

The axe is a crappy prize, probably because the people who designed the game realized that it would be extremely degenerate of them to reward players for their willingness to slaughter even a virtual dog in exchange for a toy.

Barbas hangs out on the road close to Falkreath. If you haven't started A Daedra's Best Friend yet, just jog around near Falkreath when you first visit it or any later point if you miss him that time and he'll eventually run up and start talking to you. Lod will give you some meat to lure him in, but that's not necessary to find him. When it comes to getting Barbas to follow you indefinitely instead of keeping the axe, the earliest time to do it is when you're given the mission at the shrine to retrieve the Rueful Axe from the lair of Sebastian Lort.

Barbas should be following you then, unless you've ordered him to stop following you. Instead of returning the axe to the shrine, which would be the point you'd be asked to choose whether or not to kill Barbas, just never go back there.

Barbas will continue to act as your follower, and you can have both Barbas and another follower at the same time. Note, though, that Barbas isn't exactly a "follower" in the sense of most others in the game, but a type assigned to you by his quest, and the specific reason this matters is that if he sees you while you're in stealth mode, it will trigger the "open eye" target reticle to let you know you've been seen, and further, if Barbas sees you e. You can get around this by telling him to "stay" in an area where he can't see what you're doing.

By the way, I agree with most folks replying above that in any scenario I can imagine other than you really liking the look of that axe—and I do mean how it looks , not its stats as a weapon—if you decide you don't want Barbas as your follower anymore, you'll definitely want the masque you get by sparing Barbas and returning him to his master, not the axe you get to keep by killing him.

The axe just isn't that great of a weapon, even for two-handed specialists, and if you've acquired the ability to temper it, you almost certainly already own more than one weapon that's better than an improved version of the axe.

The masque, on the other hand, improves your magic regen a bit, gives you a boost to your speech skill and boosts your barter skill even beyond that, and while it's not that great as a piece of heavy armor, it does provide some protection if you're attacked unexpectedly while wearing it and forget that you don't have your usual helmet equipped. Even if you're just completing the Daedric Lords' quests because you're hunting the Oblivion Walker achievement, the masque will count towards it, while the axe won't.

That suggests to me that even the people working on the game thought the masque was the "correct" choice. As an addendum to what I wrote above about keeping Barbas as a follower, if I remember all of this correctly, you can retrieve the axe from Rimerock Burrow and never return it to the shrine, and Barbas will still continue to follow you unless you order him to do otherwise.

You don't even have to kill Sebastian Lort to get the axe if you're sneaky about it, as encountering and defeating Lort are not among your objectives for the quest. Should I kill Barbas in Skyrim? Can Meeko the dog die? Can J Zargo be a steward?
